Belated greetings for the New Year, and I hope you had a wonderful, peaceful and rewarding Christmas break. Here in the UK we have been enjoying a variety of weather conditions, from flooding and flood alerts in some areas to snow in the north and a lot of rain generally.
2008 promises to be an exciting year, and one big talking point has been the rapid growth of interactivity on the internet, and the many ways in which that is affecting us all. The newspaper industry for example, is already having to move smartly to avoid complete meltdown, as the traditional news gathering and printing is having to move with the times, and altho many of them had developed a web presence, they are now having to re-think their strategy, because of the growth of instant reporting by you and I, complete with stills or video from our mobile phones!
Biggest joke about that development is that it gives us a chance to do our own thing, with the obvious question....will we take the chance to carve out our own niches? That could well be the greatest challenge, because make no mistake about it, there will be no way to monitor the equal opportunities or lack of same, when comparing the digital newsroom with the old fashioned office hierarchy that maintained, in the UK anyway, a decidedly white exclusive club atmosphere in just about every section of the media.
The world at large will also be watching the long drawn out happening which is the American Election Roadshow, and there's a big question for the American voter, with Barrack Obama looking a likely guy to be the first black American president. Yes, yes, I know he won't be the first US president to be threatened by rednecks armed with guns, but it will be interesting following the action as it unfolds. Does it make you wince when you read or hear about the MILLIONS they are spending on their campaigns?
More on that in time, and do let me know your thoughts on anything here!
Walk good.....

Hello Jahrock,
This is truly an interesting time in the history of the USA and therefore the world, one that my father would have found incredible!
The bit of news making history in Canada is that one of the Toronto school boards is going to start an Afrocentric school either this year or next, in response to pressure from parents who said their children were not performing well in school. This school will supposedly be geared towards children from Black/West Indian/African backgrounds in that their education will be easier for them to relate to. I'm not sure what that means but I guess that will unfold. The school will reportedly be open to students of any background.
Any observations of how this is rolling out in other countries or Canadian cities?
